botanical dyeing with fresh indigo and fresh botanical dye flowers with Blue Dog Natural Dye House

  • 684 Natick Ave Cranston RI 02921 USA (map)

Looking for a "sampler" workshop where you can try a few different types of botanical dyeing using fresh plants and flowers?  ğŸŒ¿ Come join us on Sunday, September 14 from 1-4 pm and let nature provide your color palette for creating beautiful dyes. We'll be at Hurricane Hill Farm in Cranston, RI foraging in their dye garden and using their event barn to learn how to dye with fresh indigo and how to "pound" flower prints.

Workshop Schedule:

1-2:30 PM - Fresh Indigo: Salt Rub Method Dive into the mesmerizing process of dyeing with fresh indigo leaves straight from the Hurricane Hill dye garden. Learn the salt rub method to coax a beautiful turquoise blue onto a silk bandana that you'll proudly take home.

2:30-2:45 PM - Quick Break Take a moment to relax and soak in the serene surroundings of the farm. Maybe go visit with their heritage Leicester Longwools sheep, an endangered breed known for their luxurious wool and gentle nature.

2:45-4 PM - Flower Pounding Welcome to one of the most therapeutic forms of eco-dyeing: flower pounding! With this dye method, we are imprinting (aka "pounding") fresh flowers onto pre-treated watercolor paper and a silk square using a rubber mallet. It's a fabulous stress relief, and the end-product is a work of art. We'll use fresh indigo, cosmos flowers, and coreopsis flowers that you pick from the Hurricane Hill dye garden to create art that you can take home.

This is the perfect workshop for you if you have been thinking about trying botanical dyeing, but you are not sure where to begin. All materials will be provided for you so that you can focus on having fun. Gather some friends and come have a creative afternoon!

Note: No refunds will be granted. Please be sure you can make the workshop prior to enrolling.
